External And Internal Halyard Flagpole Explained

Ever wonder what the difference is between an Internal and External halyard on a flagpole?

An External Halyard Flagpole System places the rope on the outside of the flagpole. The rope is exposed on the outside of the flagpole and travels through the truck at the top of the flagpole. An external cleat  allows the halyard to be tied off at about 4 1/2′ from the base of the flagpole. This enables ease of operation allowing the flag to be displayed and move up and/or down as required.

The Internal Halyard Flagpole System conceals the rope on the inside of the flagpole. Internal Halyard flagpoles are more expensive than  external halyard flagpoles but they offer a more streamlined look and security. The rope is in the inside of the flagpole and travels up and out of the truck at the top of the flagpole. The rope is secured near the bottom of the flagpole with a cam cleat . The rigging is accessible and controlled after unlocking an access door.

How To Attach Grommet Clips To Flagpole Halyard

Attaching new grommet clips is quite a simple job to complete.  The clips are fastened to the rope and then attached to the brass grommets.  This can easily be done with the rope still on the flagpole.

How To Dispose Of A Worn Flag

One question we are frequently asked is “How do I dispose of my worn flag?”

Below is the proper way to dispose of a Canadian Flag from The Government of Canada site.

Disposal of the National Flag of Canada

A flag is considered to be worn when the colour has faded, it has developed a hole or the outermost seam (fly) of the flag has become frayed. When a flag becomes tattered and is no longer in a suitable condition for use, it should be disposed of in a dignified manner.

The disposal of a flag may be handled in the following manner:

Flags made of natural fibres (wool, cotton, linen) should be burned in a dignified manner, privately, without ceremony or public attention being drawn to the destruction of the material.

Flags made of synthetic material (nylon or polyester) should not be burned due to environmental damage and potential fire hazard. They should be respectfully torn into strips, with each element of the flag reduced to a single colour, so that the remaining pieces do not resemble a flag. The individual pieces should then be placed in a bag for disposal – the shreds of fabric should not be reused or fashioned into anything.

Meet the Flag Spreader

The flag spreader is a great tool to elevate the look of an indoor display set.

It is very simple to install if you follow the steps below.

Step 1-Positioning-Slide the black mounting clamp onto the indoor flagpole.  We recommend putting it just above the joint where the 2 pieces of the pole connect together.

Step 2 -Tighten the thumb screw on the back of the clamp so it is tight against the pole.  Arms should be facing upwards.

Step 3- Drape your flag over the arms and attach the clips to the top edge/hem of the flag.

Step 4- Adjust the arms to how you would like the flag to drape.

Step 5- Stand back and look at your beautiful flag display.

February 15th is Flag Day

In 1964 Parliament voted to adopt a new design for the Canadian Flag and called for submissions.  Close to 4000 designs were submitted.  Submission came on many materials including tissue paper, wall paper, pieces of cloth etc.  Many used cutouts from magazines and post cards.   The final design was announced on Dec 15, 1964.  The official ceremony inaugurating the new red and white Maple Leaf flag was held on Feb 15th, 1965.  Feb 15th was then declared Flag Day in Canada.

This is a great opportunity to try our beautiful hand sewn nylon appliqued flags made at our factory in Barrie, ON.
Made with exceptional attention to craftsmanship and detail.  The red bars and maple leaf are sewn together resulting in a vibrant, rich appearance. These flags are made of 100% heavyweight nylon 200 denier fabric.
